Peruvian President Alan Garcia signed into law declaring the image of "black Christ" as "a symbol of religiosity and popular sentiment."
The Lord of Miracles, the most venerated image of the country, was declared on 18 October "Patron of Catholic Religious Spirituality Peru" in a ceremony before thousands of people Plaza Mayor de Lima.
Peruvian President Alan Garcia, who signed the law declaring the image of "black Christ" as "a symbol of religiosity and popular sentiment," joined the tribute in the Plaza. The image of the Lord of Miracles dates from 1661, when a slave of African origin painted the image of a black Christ on the walls of a humble home in the neighborhood of Pachacamilla, which by then was the outskirts of Lima.
The image, which remained intact after an earthquake on October 20, 1687 destroyed the then capital of the Viceroyalty of Peru, runs every October since the streets of the Peruvian capital of more massive processions of the Catholic tradition in the world.
